The car didnt exactly perform up to our expectations at Pistonhead open #2
We had a set of borrowed cams from a friends old race car and they were not really up for the task.
After some conversation with Kevin Ban at Kelford Cams i New Zeeland,
I ordered a new set of cams. Since I am rather retarded when it comes to cams and I find them
more or less mysterious and advanced beyond my knowledge I put my trust in Kevins word.
I was under the impression I ordered a set of cams more or less like copys of my old ones...
Boy, was I wrong!
They were manufactured and delivered to Sweden, pretty much the other side of the planet in one week.
I find that pretty impressive. When I checked the cam spec sheet I discovered the new cams had 308 degrees duration and 12,3mm lift. =) Japtuning sponsrade med nya vippor så att de nya kammarna skulle bli fint inkörda.
As the simple mechanic I am it took me all night to install them, with adjusting valve clearance,
degreeing the cams and so on. Nice sun rise when I took a break in the morning...
Monday morning 07.00 it was time to head off to Uppsala and PBZ, Performance by Z.
An oil change on the truck made it more powerfull than ever. I bet it got at least 40hp now... =)
The 70km trip to Uppsala went well over my expectations and I was there at 08.00
The dyno-room was prepared and ready so we just rolled the car in and attached the hydralic rototest pumps to the cars hubs.
A number of people were involved in the tuning of the car by phone during the day and evening.
We had some minor problems with miss firing during the pulls and we tryed different tricks to solve it.
The main reason to put the car in the dyno was to tune the engine and its components with the new cams.
Finnaly around 22.00 there were only some small missfirings left.
It was the rev limit in the ecu... =)
830bhp and 723Nm at the hubs have to be descent.
Now we have to see how the car performs with it new tuning.
I took the car for a spin later in the week but it was hard to determine how it went,
since the Hoosier slicks just went bananas as soon as there were slightest hint of boost...
A bad thing was that the whater temp did act a bit funny and the idle were a bit jumpy.
I removed the head and discovered what the problem was.
The head was skew so CRS Motorrenovering gave it a shave.
A couple of valves needed grinding and one spark plug hole had no threads left. Meca Vällingby gave me a spark plug re-thread kit.
The intake had cracked too, so I had to weld that bastard too...
A couple of days later all was put together again.
Next weekend we will attend to a Swedish national champion race in Sundsvall 370km north of Stockholm.
They dont have any FWD or 4to6 cylinder class, so we will attend to Super Comp (8,90 breakout).
Not that we will have any great chanse of sucess in winning, but we will have a great track,
and nothing will stop us from trying... =)
